View of Toledo

View of Toledo, 1600, El Greco
121.3 cm 108.6 cm

View of Toledo is a Spanish Renaissance Oil on Canvas Painting created by El Greco from 1596 to 1600. It lives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The image is available via Institutional Open Content, and tagged Landscapes.

El Greco only painted two landscape paintings, both of the Spanish city of Toledo. In this impressionistic view of the city, El Greco has rearranged the landmarks into a serpentine crawl through the surrounding hills. The low-slung clouds and elongated Mannerist style have been seen as a precursor to Cezanne's landscapes, and even Van Gogh's Starry Night.
