Arch of Titus

ItalyAncient Rome — 82

It is sometimes unnerving to dig into the history of architecture for the sheer quantity of violence and blood that many ancient buildings are soaked in. The arch of Titus, one of the first 'triumphal arches' was built in 82 CE to honor the recently deceased Roman emperor Titus. More specifically, it was built to commemorate Titus's crushing victory at the Siege of Jerusalem twelve years before.
