Women, flowers and daily life in Kazakhstan

Aisha Garifovna Galymbayeva (Айша Ғарифқызы Ғалымбаева) was born in Esik, a small village nestled into the base of the Tian Shan, the Heavenly Mountain in the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan. A.Galymbaeva began painting early, illustrating her mother and grandmother on canvases she would sell at the local bazaar. But the Esik market was just the beginning, A.Galymbaeva would become one of the most influential and awarded artists in Kazakh history, earning the title The People’s Artist of Kazakhstan.

At 22, A.Galymbaeva entered the Almaty Theater and Art School, and spent four years learning from Leonid Leontyev, Alexey Bortnikov, and Abram Cherkassky. After graduation, she moved to Moscow, studying art direction for film at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK).
