Portrait of Pare Watene

Pare Watana was a member of the Ngāti Maru tribe of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori people. Not much is known about Pare Watana, though we may guess that she was of chiefly descent by the tail feathers of the now extinct huia bird worn in her hair.
