The full title of this three-panel woodblock print is Russo-Japanese Naval Battle at the Entrance of Inchon: The Great Victory of the Japanese Navy--BANZAI! But in a fashion typical to Kiyochika, the composition drains the scene of celebration, leaving the successful destruction of enemy vessels an orange smear on the horizon. Conflict is far away, and though black-clad navy men raise their arms in victory, they are dwarfed by the vast ocean and the seaside cliffs. Small men and their little wars.
